How Many Web Hosting Disc Space your Need

Author: andy tao

Its important to calculate how many storage you need for your next web hosting plan. And sign up to a small hosting space or get into the wrong hosting package will caused lots of problem in short coming future.

Commonly, a web hosting company will offer you one or two web hosting plan to choose from. And usually you will start with the most basic plan, just to try out the new host, and take the smallest risk on your money.

If you sign up a hosting plan cause of good price, and not considering the disc space you require, then this will be the biggest mistake you can ever make. Initially, you will be thinking 1000MB will be sufficient for the coming one year or more. You haven’t calculate in disc space taken by your database, or media files, photos and pictures, webpage content and files uploaded by users etc. The website will keep growing and you will not have time to go through each files and do housekeeping each month. This will killing you, and wasted lots of time.

Do a simple calculation, how many webpage you will have. And allocate each page with 200kb of file size. That is more than enough. Then how many media files you going to have. If its video files, you will need to make the calculation carefully, and take into account the future growth rate.

After you had estimated the 12 months usage that you need, double it up. For example, you will require 10GB storage space for your website to run for the following 12 months, get a web hosting with 20GB storage space. You will need to reserve the space for yourself.

Usually you will be thinking, I will upgrade to 20GB when I need it. And usually web hosting company will screen through your files. And if they found many unused files for your website, they will write to you ask for clean up. You just triggered the big boss.

And even they proceed with space upgrade, its depend on the current server have remaining space or not. Note that most web hosting server is already 80% in used. Most the web spaces already in used by other account, and when you want to have more space, they might need to move you to the other server that have extra space for you. That will be subject to few hours of downtime. And you need to consider this as well.

Conclusion is that, buy more space even you not require them now. Commonly I will find web hosting that offering me 50GB storage space and above.

"Free" Is Not Free

By John V. W. Howe

"FREE" -- You see it everywhere on the Net. When you dig deeper, you always find that whatever the offer, it is not really free. It will usually cost you your name and email address on a sign up form for a newsletter or some such offer. At the very least, it takes your time to even check it out.

A classic use of "free" on the Net is in web hosting. There are many sites that advertise free web hosting. Now who can turn down a bargain like that? Being a frugal person of Scots heritage, I for one considered it until I really dug down past the top layer.

Historically, many of these hosts have started up and disappeared quickly. Poof, there goes the hard work you invested in setting up your website. Now you have to find another host and go through the process again.

Another group of the free web hosts began as free hosts, and then started charging for services with the hope that the users would pay rather than go through the hassle of moving their website.

Still others require the right to put some form of advertising on your web pages. This does not project a professional image to your viewers.

This is still not the major hidden cost of a free web host.

The real hidden cost of a free web host (or a budget web host) is the lack of services that the host provides.

Put yourself in the position of the CEO of the free web host. How much can you pay for support personnel if you are not charging the user for your services? How solid a hardware system can you afford to host the websites? How much can you invest to guarantee no downtime on the servers?

If the web host does not provide the services as part of your hosting agreement, then you have to provide the services yourself. This causes you to pay for the services or work long, hard hours to compensate for the free web host. Your time is worth money. You should be realistic in your accounting for your time as part of the costs of your business.

If you are not familiar with SEO (if you do not know what SEO means, then you definitely need support); if you do not know how to program in HTML; if you do not know about Google site maps; if you do not know what the new XML sitemaps file at Yahoo looks like; if you do not know about blogging; (the list goes on and on); then you should not be on a free web host.

Unfortunately, if you remain on the free host, odds are you will find that you are included in the over ninety percent of individuals who start out to make a living on the Internet and fail.

The ideal web host should provide you with a multitude of services that all but guarantee that you will be successful. Do you think that a free web host will do that?

The old adage, "You get what you pay for" applies on the Net just like anywhere else.

If you have a small website that is a personal toy or you need a one page site for a landing page, then perhaps a free web host is your answer.

When your website is a serious site that you intend for your income for years to come, be realistic, bite the bullet, and pay for the services that will give you every chance for success.

The decision on which web host to use is the most important decision that you will make as you launch your Internet business. It will spell the difference between success and failure.

Make this decision wisely.

The Good, the Bad and the Myths Surrounding Free Web Hosting

By Fei Lim

It seems that about everyone either has their own website or is on their way to getting one online. If you're still contemplating how to get your website online, all the free web hosting options may send your head swimming! "Absolutely free web hosting," "No strings attached ever," "Get your site online today!" These promises abound on the World Wide Web. What's a person to do? How do you choose? Not to worry, with a little information you will understand the good, the bad and the myths that surround free web hosting.

First of all, let's look at a few myths surrounding free web hosting.

Myth Number 1: You will not have 24 hour support available with free web hosting. Not necessarily true! Yes, some hosting providers will not offer 24 hour technical support. But, with a little digging, you will find a provider that offers around the clock support.

Myth Number 2: Your website will have much more down time and crash often with free web hosting. Maybe. But again, this depends on who you decide upon as your provider. Find a provider that prides themselves with offering excellent service to all their clients and it will serve you well.

Myth Number 3: Free Web hosting providers will inundate your site with ads. Now this one has the most merit. Until just recently a free web hosting account basically guaranteed an attack of ads on your site. But, with the increasing number of providers offering free hosting, you can now find a provider that promises to keep his or her ads to a minimum.

Before we get into the bad, let's cover the good about free web hosting.

For starters, it's free! If you are developing a personal page with relatively few images, free may just suit you well. Using a free web hosting provider gives you the option to put a site up that you normal would opt not to. An increasingly popular item to host online is a resume. You could also publish a wedding or baby site. Some providers also offer the use of an online web site builder. For a basic site, free hosting is a very good price.

Now for the ugly side of free web hosting. Unless you do your homework, you could very easily end up with sub-par service. Your site may be frequently down. Security measures may be lax, which could allow others to hack into your site. The provider may not offer back-up services and you more than likely won't have access to the root menu.

The silver lining: since there are many providers offering free web hosting you can find one that more than likely offers what you need. If developing a small site, feel free to give free web hosting a try. If it doesn't work out, fire your provider. Either move on to another free provider or pay the small fee for monthly web hosting service.

6 Tips Of A Good Web Host

By Alvin Phang

Previously in my other host, I realized due to overwhelm of people visiting my website it slowed down recently as I was using quite a cheap web host which then later I decided to migrate over to HostGator.

There are various things you must know before you decide which web host you should go for.

1. Support is the No.1 Key

Why support is because I had my website down quite a lot of times, but because there was no way to contact my host either then submitting a ticket I could not get to them when I have some urgent launch sometimes on my websites.

So it VERY important to get a good host with great support and HostGator actually not only have a LIVE Support 24/7 but also a free Skype line where I can call them through Skype for free for support which is SUPER GREAT!

2. Price

My previous host cost me about US$39 per year, which is fairly cheap but what I did not like with that host was there was no online support but other then that the services were great. Because I am now more seriously in my online business I would need online support.

HostGator had what I wanted with support and they only charge about US$9.95 per month which is super affordable with the great features they had in the plan!

3. Features

There is one thing about web host not many would know is that, if you sign up with a plan that only allow you to host 6 domains you are been cheated by what you actually should have. It is because in their WHM panel they can simply change the 6 to unlimited but they choose not too and some even worst they only restrict you to 100 emails.

What you want to look for are unlimited features in all areas. There are some things you need to look for

- Unlimited Emails

- Unlimited Add-On Domains (adding more domains on the same account)

- Unlimited Database

- Fantastico (A set of great script a MUST HAVE)

- Support PHP files

- Unlimited FTP Accounts

- 30 Day Money Back Guarantee (If they don’t have this means they are not confident in their services)

- No Contract

- 24 x 7 Support

- Diskspace of at least 10 GB

- Bandwidth of at least 100GB

I am currently using the Baby Plan by HostGator which have even better features that I mentioned above for only US$9.95 per month you have 100GB of space and 1,000GB of BANDWIDTH which is A LOT!

4. Location of server

Some people are not aware that the location of the server really matters a lot! I think especially after the Taiwan Earthquake a lot of server were down due to lousy rerouting of servers on the Internet Network.

You can go to http://www.dnsstuff.com do a trace route of the server and see the number of hops to reach your computer.

What the table shows in the website above is the number of computer terminal it takes to actually route to your computer to get to my website.

The lesser there the better the web host is, there are some lousy hosting takes up to 24 hops just to reach your computer! Where as HostGator is sometimes 7 hops only! or 14 hops! Which shows the server can connect to the user faster!

5. Disk Space

Having a web host is like having your personal C Drive but it is on a virtual drive on your web server. Example if I sign up a host that give me 100GB like HostGator. What that means is that I can store 100GB of information to be shared online with my visitors. The more the Disk Space you have the better as you can store more stuff online.

6. Bandwidth

Alright this topic some people actually got confused this with Disk Space. Bandwidth is basically the number of information you can download from your server which is normally calculated by kb.

This is a break down of what is KB, MB and GB.

1,000 KB = 1MB

1,000 MB = 1GB

So when I say 100GB it mean 1,000,000 KB which is a lot. Why? One word document for example is about 50kb. If lets say you have a word document you want to share online name as GatherSuccess.doc which is about 50KB

I put a link for GatherSuccess.doc on my server at 50KB and I have 100GB of bandwidth it means that

1,000,000 / 50 = 20,000 visitors can download my document file for the month.

Bandwidth will be reset every end of the month by the web host, if you overshot the bandwidth most of the time they will just charge you what ever excess you use.

If you are looking for a web host I strongly recommend HostGator as it’s very reliable and they response to you in an instant.

Top 10 Web Hosting Companies

By Alison Cole

A web hosting company specializes in hosting websites for other companies or individual customers through their services. Several companies host websites for commercial and personal use of their clients. Usually clients opt for standard companies because users could be assured of quality services. Clients also depend upon these companies because they may be able to provide high end functional tools for administration. These companies are also sought after by customers due to their secure and reliable back up. Several web hosting companies who claim to provide large amount of data storage space and data transfer speeds may not have such facilities. It is advisable for clients to verify level of services offered by web hosting companies.

There are some companies that are considered to offer top end services. Top 10 web hosting companies are Bluehost, Startlogic, IXwebhosting, Lunarpages, Ipowerweb, Yahoo business, easycgi, inmotion hosting, powweb, and ipower. Blueshost is considered to be the number one web hosting company while ipower is ranked at number ten. Bluehost is ranked at 10.0, Startlogic is ranked at 9.9, ranking of Ixwebhosting is 9.8, ranking of lunarpages is 9.5, ranking of ipowerweb is 9.4, ranking of yahoo business is 9.2, ranking of easycgi is 9.1, ranking of inmotion hosting is 9.0, ranking of powweb is 8.5 and ranking of ipower is 8.4. These rankings of companies are carefully compiled, rated, and reviewed by webmasters and industry critics.

Different companies have different disk space in their servers. Larger websites need more online disk space so clients usually check as to how much space is provided by each web hosting company. Disk space of bluehost is 10000 MB and disk space of ipower is 3000 MB.

Bandwidth is also a major issue for clients availing services of these standard companies. It is expected that the page should load immediately when normal user tries to visit a particular website. Bandwidth of bluehost is 250 GB and bandwidth of ipower is 50 GB.

There are several companies other than above mentioned that may offer comparable services. Clients are advised to use their discretion when choosing a web hosting other than those listed as top ten to procure high end services. Technical support is another factor that needs in-depth consideration when making a choice.

Very Very Cheap Web Hosting

BY Steve Hill

Are you on the look out for cheap web hosting? Are you annoyed at having to pay for web hosting in the first place? Are you finding it hard to choose which hosting company to use, as there are just so many of them? Until recently I would have answered yes to all of these questions, however I now have found a solution which means that thinking and stressing about web hosting is no longer an issue for me. In this article I will write about this very solution.

Web hosting has always been one aspect of the internet that I despise. I have to admit that I am not exactly as clued up as I could be about the hosting of an internet site, which in a way only adds to my frustration. When I had my first website built, I was very excited as I waited for to go live, for all of the public to see. The designer phoned me to let me know that the site was ready, you now need to purchase some web hosting he stated. I replied with, what is that?

I had already bought a domain and paid a lot of money for this chap to design the site, was he now expecting me to shell out even more money? The designer explained all about what web hosting is and I of course had to pay.

As the years have gone by, I have seen many different companies offering cheap web hosting and find it very hard to know which ones to trust. I then heard via a friend about a reseller account. This is where you pay a certain amount of money per year to host as many sites as you want on the same server.

I then thought to myself that any web designer worth his salt is bound to have his own reseller account and therefore would be able to host my site for me. Free web hosting is now always included in any deal I ever strike with a web designer. Give it a go and you could also see your web hosting costs eradicated.

Linux Web Hosting

By Ali Foroutan

Linux is a complete operating system that is similar but not identical to Unix. It runs on a wide variety of hardware, ranging from Intel and AMD CPUs to more exotic hardware such as Digital Alpha computers, PowerPCs, and Silicon Graphics workstations. Probably the most unique characteristic of Linux is that it is freely distributable. Freely distributable means that the source code for the kernel and most software cannot be withheld. It does not mean that companies cannot charge for it. By means of comparison, hosting a website on Unix or Linux is nearly identical.

There are many options available when it comes to writing CGI scripts on a Linux machine. The most common at the time of this writing are PHP and PERL. There are many introductions, tutorials, and even sample scripts available on the Internet when it comes to PHP and PERL.

Database types available for Linux, depends mostly on the web hosting provider you select to host your website. There are many flavors of databases that run on Linux, but the most prevalent among web host providers are mSQL, MySQL., and PostgreSQL. These databases are all relational in nature, and allow highly optimized communication with your website for quick retrieval of information.

If you plan to host the site yourself, and you own the web servers or the software on them, then Linux (or Unix) would definitely be a less expensive option. If you plan to sign up with a web hosting company, and they own the servers and the software installed on them, you will find that there are excellent hosting options available for each platform at very comparable prices.

Do You Need Dedicated Server Hosting?

By Tarun Gupta

When it comes to website hosting, the biggest question that arises is whether there is a need for dedicated servers?

Before we trying and address that question, let’s try and understand what a dedicated server is.

Dedicated Server Hosting

Dedicated server hosting pertains to having a single server entirely for a network/ website. That in effect means that you would not be sharing a server with others. Moreover, the dedicated servers are available on rent from web hosting companies, so you get a server all to your self and needless to say that has its own set of advantages.

Advantages of Dedicated Server Hosting

You can provide customized and prompt online support to your clients.

Having a reliable customer support system is vital for any businesses. It gains more prominence in business models which are depended on customer interaction. That’s why if your business demands prompt customer support you need to invest on a dedicated server as they are more reliable and secure as compared to shared servers.

Maintenance of website up-time is easy

Website up-time is a measure in percentage referring to the time-frame during which the website is running and is accessible via the World Wide Web. Needless to point out here that the up-time is directly related to the reliability of a website. With a dedicated server, you can monitor your website with relative ease. Which in-turn would definitely assist you in maintaining higher levels of up-time.

Hardware and Software up gradation

With a dedicated server by your side, you can tweak it as per the peculiar hardware and software requirements of your clients. That may not be easy with shared hosting as you would be sharing space on the server and the settings would be set to common levels and hence you would not be able to change them as often as you would like to change.

Other value added advantages

With a dedicated server, it would be easy for you to upgrade to bigger bandwidth supporting plans, which makes dedicated server a highly scalable option. Furthermore, with dedicated servers you get the option of availing data and power backup, as that might not be available with shared servers.

Disadvantages of dedicated servers

There are no visible disadvantages with dedicated servers apart from the fact that hosting on them costs you money. Whether it’s a disadvantage or not will depend on the scale of your online business and if you are getting hundreds if not thousands of visitors on a daily basis then dedicated servers are the way to go.

For any online business, having a quickly downloadable and reliable website is of paramount importance. And, a dedicated server is the way to go for achieving that and much more.
